Thing Thirteen: K-12 Learning On-Line in my PJS!

July 11, 2010

Sitting in my pjs was certainly more relaxing and helped me remember that I am definitely in summer vacation mode! ;-)   I attended two of the conferences and found them both informative and entertaining. In Options for Building a Classroom and Teacher Website, Cyndi Dannerkuhn presented a convincing argument on the pros of having your own teacher website.  Although my school provides a portal (see image to the left) Picture 2that is easy to use and easy for students to access, it is more limited than iweb or weebly.  One point she made that really made sense to me is this: even though the initial creation of the page will be laborious and time consuming, once it is finished it can be maintained and updated quickly.  I did visit some other sites created by teachers to get some initial ideas, but I am already starting to create in my head!  After viewing this presentation, I moved on to Mathew Neeleman’s presentation, Copyrights, Fair Use and Pirates in the Classroom. He backed up everything I learned about creative commons and cleared up the misunderstandings I had about using images with this simple statement: just because what is out there on the internet is “free to me it does not mean it is free!”  You cannot use anything for educational purposes, even when it is not for profit.  I will certainly change my practice and model appropriate use of other’s “intellectual property.” I will also teach my students about creative commons and try to dable in “value added content”!  Here is a link to a skype lesson students had with Harvard Law Professor, Lawrence Lessig- a great conversation!  Here is a link to Mathew Needleman’s Ning.
